History of Dental Implants

The technology behind the modern dental implant – hailed as the future of dentistry – was discovered entirely by accident.

In 1952 Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark of Lund, Sweden, was conducting experiments on several lab rats. At a crucial point in the experiment, he realized he could not recover the titanium microscopes he'd mounted in the rats' bones. Against all scientific comprehension, the titanium had bonded with living bone tissue.
